Cast Your Net on the Other Side
There are moments in our walk with Jesus when we feel like the disciples did on that early morning by the Sea of Galilee — exhausted, discouraged, and coming up empty after giving our best effort.
Recently, I found myself in that place. Deadlines slipping. Expectations weighing heavy. My own sense of “where I should be by now” pressing on my chest. In that moment, I prayed a simple, earnest prayer:
“Jesus, please tell me which side of the boat to cast my net into, so that I may catch a bountiful lot of fish to provide abundance for my family and share Your glory.”
I meant every word.
When Our Efforts Fall Short, His Direction Never Does
My mind went straight to John 21 — that powerful scene after the resurrection. The disciples had fished all night and caught nothing. Then Jesus appeared on the shore and said:
“Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” (John 21:6)
They obeyed — and suddenly their nets were overflowing.
Not because they tried harder.
Not because they changed their strategy.
Not because they were more skilled than the night before.
But because Jesus spoke, and they listened.
I Needed That Reminder
In my own struggle, I realized I had been rowing hard… but not necessarily rowing with Him. I had been planning, pushing, striving — but not pausing to ask:
“Lord, which side of the boat?”
And the truth is, Jesus is not just the God of miracles — He is the God of direction. He doesn’t only bless the work of our hands; He guides the work of our hands.
Scripture says:
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:6)
Not some of your ways.
Not only the spiritual ones.
All of them — work, deadlines, decisions, responsibilities, and the quiet burdens we carry alone.
Your Best Planning Is Done With Him
If you’re feeling behind…
If you’re carrying pressure…
If you’re wondering how to move forward…
Remember this:
Jesus is already standing on the shore of your situation.
He sees what you cannot.
He knows what you need before you ask.
And He is ready to speak direction into your life.
Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t a new boat, a new job, a new plan, or a new season.
Sometimes the breakthrough is simply casting the net on the other side — the side He points to.
