Never Truly Alone: Grief, Fellowship, and God’s Presence

When I moved a few years ago I left my cat with my mother. She had always insisted she was a dog person, not a cat person, but over the years they shared she quietly fell in love with that little creature. Five months ago the cat had a heart attack and, to our surprise, pulled through. We were grateful — and then the medication that kept her heart steady began to damage her kidneys.

This week her kidneys failed suddenly. The poor cat was howling and clearly suffering, so we took her to the vet. Our vet said medication might buy maybe a day or two, but she would be very uncomfortable. My mother made the heartbreaking decision to let her go. She held that tiny bundle of love in her arms as it drifted off and its heart stopped. It was one of those days that leaves a quiet ache.

That cat had been a companion to my mother after my father died. Losing her has left my mother feeling very sad and fully alone. I reminded her that grief is normal, expected, and I encouraged her to remember the gift of the years they had together (and the other animals that brought her joy over the decades, including three dogs). Those memories are real blessings, even in the pain.

This week made me seek out Ecclesiastes 3 ("there is a time to weep and a time to laugh") and Psalm 23. Those passages bring me peace as they remind me that God is with us — always. If you are struggling right now, or if you feel truly alone, please remember you are never truly alone. Christ is with you, and He has given us the Holy Spirit to comfort and counsel. Lean on Him. And don’t stay isolated: reach out to friends, family, or a church community. My mother is going to lunch with friends today and again tomorrow — small acts of fellowship that will help carry her through.

God bless you and keep you.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the comfort of Your presence in our sorrow. Hold those who grieve close, remind them of the gifts of love they have known, and send friends to walk beside them. Amen.
