đ When Fall Feels Heavy â Remember Where God Last Met You
The leaves have started to change around here. A few have already drifted to the ground, and every year this season hits me the same way â fall is the loneliest time for me. Most people would say winter, but winter still has the sun⊠and The Son. When sunlight bounces off fresh snow into a crystalâblue sky, it lifts your spirit whether you want it to or not.
Fall is different.
Fall has a certain gloom to it.
The air cools, the days shorten, and people begin to retreat indoors. We start to hibernate like bears â Netflix, a warm fireplace, and a cozy hoodie become our companions after raking leaves or taking the dogs for a brisk walk down the path out back. Fall makes me think of loss⊠of whatâs missing.
It often brings me back to thoughts of my father.
I remember him sharing stories of growing up on his rural farm with no electricity until he was a teen. No internet. No screens. Just two lanterns after dinner â and if you didnât get one, it was bedtime because you couldnât see a thing! I didnât believe him at first, but after driving up to the old family farm myself, I realized he wasnât teasing. That was life.
When the melancholy of fall starts creeping in, my mind always drifts to my favorite place near that farm: a tiny oneâroom church at a crossroads, maybe ten pews total, white walls, red brick exterior, and a small cemetery out back where my grandparents rest.
I didnât understand it as a kid, but I always felt closer to God there.
There was no veil.
No noise.
No distraction.
Just Him.
The simplicity was the beauty. The wooden pews werenât comfortable enough to fall asleep in, so your focus stayed exactly where it belonged â on the Lord. Thinking about my father leads me to that church⊠and that church leads me to My Father in Heaven.
Sometimes the rituals, the noise, and the distractions of life pull us away from what should be our main focus. If youâre not feeling God where you are, maybe you need a change. Start by remembering where you last felt Him. Where He last met you. Where the Holy Spirit last stirred something in your heart.
And if youâre still unsure, go back to the source â His Word.
Open your Bible.
Abide in Him.
He will meet you again.
Fall isnât a season of loss.
Itâs a season of reflection â a chance to prepare for winter, to revisit whatâs working, and to let God show you what needs to change.
And maybe thatâs the invitation of this season:
to abide.
To stay close to Him when life feels dim.
To dwell in His presence the way I felt in that tiny church â no veil, no noise, just God.
That word has been on my heart lately, and itâs why we included ABIDE in our new HIS Collection. Not as a fashion statement, but as a reminder â something simple you can throw on during these colder months that quietly points your heart back to Christ. You can see the Abide hoodie here
Just a small way to carry the message of the season:
Remain in Him. He remains with you.
God bless,
