š Play Hard. Trust God. (Even When You Donāt Feel Like It)
Fall is almost here, and with it comes one of my favourite rhythms of the season ā the start of NFL and College Football. Thereās something about the energy, the preparation, the discipline, and the sheer effort poured into every snap that reminds me of a deeper spiritual truth.
And itās captured perfectly in Colossians 3:23:
āWhatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.ā
That verse hits differently when you picture an athlete giving everything he has ā not because the crowd is cheering, not because the coach is watching, but because he knows who he ultimately plays for.
But hereās the honest part:
Sometimes we donāt feel like giving our all.
Sometimes the ātask in front of usā isnāt a stadium moment.
Itās tedious.
Itās boring.
Itās frustrating.
Itās way outside our comfort zone.
Or itās something we simply donāt want to do.
I get it. I have days where Iād rather sit in the backyard with the dogs and read a book than tackle the work God has placed in front of me. Laziness creeps in. Discouragement creeps in. The flesh whispers, āNot today.ā
But Colossians 3:23 reminds us that our work is never just work.
SOMEONE IS ALWAYS WATCHING - AND IT'S NOT WHO YOU THINK
We often assume our efforts go unseen.
We think no one notices when we choose integrity, diligence, patience, or excellence.
But people do notice ā sometimes from a distance.
And more importantly, the Lord sees every moment, every choice, every effort, every sacrifice.
As Christians, we are held to a higher standard. Not because weāre perfect ā weāre all painfully aware of our flaws ā but because the world is watching for reasons to point out the shortcomings of believers.
Donāt make it easy for the enemy.
Your character is revealed most clearly in the moments when you think no one is watching.
Thatās where the real battle is fought.
Thatās where spiritual maturity is built.
Thatās where faith becomes visible.
Play Hard. Trust God.
Thatās why I love the message on one of our hoodies this season ā the one with the football player on the front:
āPlay Hard. Trust God.ā
āBuilt in Faith. Made for Victory.ā
Itās not just a sports slogan.
Itās a spiritual posture.
Work hard ā not for applause, not for recognition, not for human approval ā but because your effort is an act of worship.
Trust God ā because He sees, He strengthens, He rewards, and He uses even the smallest acts of obedience for His glory.
If youāre facing a task today that feels beneath you, beyond you, or simply annoyingā¦
do it with all your heart.
Do it unto the Lord.
Do it as a believer who knows who they truly play for.
And remember:
Character is what you really act like when you think no one is watching.
Letās live in a way that honours Christ ā on the field, off the field, and in every quiet corner of our daily lives.
