The Only Race Worth Winning
This Sunday, millions will watch Spain and Argentina battle for the World Cup. One final match. One winner. One trophy that only one nation can claim.
This sporting moment makes me think about the Apostle Paul.
Because Paul didn’t just talk about running a race.
He talked about winning the race that actually matters.
And according to Scripture, there are only two races any of us can run in life:
You are either running toward God…
or you are running away from Him — and toward the enemy.
There is no neutral ground. No middle lane. No “I’m just jogging casually through life.”
Every step of your life is pointed somewhere.
So the real question becomes:
Who are you running to?

The One Way Forward
Jesus didn’t leave us guessing about the path that leads to God. He gave us the clearest equation for life, peace, and eternity:
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
There aren’t two ways.
There aren’t multiple lanes.
There isn’t a “good person” exemption.
You cannot earn eternal life through charity, kindness, fairness, or moral effort.
You cannot run your way into heaven by being better than the next person.
There is one way:
Believe in Christ as your Savior with your whole heart.
Love the Lord with all your heart and mind.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
That is the race that leads home.
When You Stumble in the Race
Last night, I stumbled.
I was out for dinner with a friend — a genuinely good man. Kind. Honest. Empathetic. The type of person you’d trust with your kids, your home, your reputation.
We talked about family.
We talked about work.
We talked about his possible move out of Missouri for a new job.
We talked about the food.
But I never asked him what he thinks about Jesus.
I didn’t say grace before the meal — something I always do.
I could say I “forgot,” but that’s not quite true.
I failed to love my neighbor.
I failed to share Christ’s peace.
I failed to run toward Jesus in that moment.
And I regret it.
I pray God gives me another chance — because I want my friend to know the love, acceptance, purpose, and peace that Christ has given me.
Getting Back Up
But here’s the mercy of God:
When you stumble in the race, you can get back up.
This morning, I did exactly that.
I set my feet back toward Jesus — because His race is the only race worth winning.
The trophy is eternal life.
The victory is Christ Himself.
And the finish line is the Father’s arms.
A Gentle Reflection
Take a moment today and ask:
Which direction are my feet pointed?
Let that question draw you closer to the One who already ran the race for you — and won.
